SP2 simplifies administration by enabling IT administrators to deploy and support a single service pack for clients and servers. Please see the Windows Server SP2/Windows Vista SP2 page on TechNet/MSDN for additional details and documentation.

SP2 is an update to Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista that incorporates improvements discovered through automated feedback, as well as updates that have been delivered since SP1. By providing these fixes integrated into a single service pack for both client and server, Microsoft provides a single high-quality update that minimizes deployment and testing complexity for customers.

Service Pack 1 is a prerequisite for installing Service Pack 2. Please make sure that your system is running Service Pack 1 before you install Service Pack 2.

Note: Windows Server 2008 released with Service Pack 1 included. The 5800 touchscreen is an all new concept from Nokia, although previews of it showed up initially on The Dark Knight. The phone had a lot of hype, so it was all the more surprising with the low retail price and the good amount of features.
The 5800 boasts a 3.2 inch 640 x 360 touch-screen interface designed to be used with a fingertip, stylus or plectrum, and uses tactile feedback to help users confirm button and key clicks, and it comes with quad-band 850/900/1800/1900 MHz. The 5800’s camera is 3.2 megapixel Carl Zeiss Tessar with dual LED camera Flash. The phone also has an accelerometer, so 4-way auto-rotation is possible. Nokia also threw in A-GPS and Nokia Maps 2.0 support.

The 5800’s predecessor was the 5320 Xpressmusic, which shared similar specs and came six months earlier than the 5800. The 5800 is an XpressMusic series phone, which emphasises on music and multimedia playback. And with added connectivity options such as HSDPA and Wi-FI gives the phone some more zest.

The 5800 XpressMusic runs on a single 369 MHz ARM11 CPU and has 128 MB of RAM. Given the high-resolution screen, this probably isn't the fastest Nokia handset around. But among its touchscreen counterparts, the 5800 has performed quite well.

The phone runs on the S60 Touch OS- the 5th edition S60 been modified to run on Touch UI, with a few minor improvements. The S60 Touch UI has rendered the previous shortcut keys into your four favourite contacts and has a multimedia shortcut key.

 Our Opinion:

The Xpressmusic line has been around since 2006 to counter Sony Ericsson’s Walkman series, and its closest predecessor is the 5320 Xpressmusic which shares its high-end functionality.

Nokia seems also to be caving in the copy protection area, after successful hacks on their DRM services (Nokia with Music), prompted the Finns to drop all copy protection for the 1,000 songs inside the phone. Whether this represent a shift in the idea between copy protection and free sharing for phones remains to be seen.

The low price of RM 1,499 makes it extremely competitive among touchscreen devices, with most touchscreen phones closer to the RM 2,000 mark.

Game console system doubles as a great Blu-ray Disc player, too.

Blue-Ray Disc Console
By Melissa J. Perenson

From the outset, the PlayStation 3 has billed itself as more than just another game console. And this machine lives up to its promise: It's one of the most capable Blu-ray Disc players available today. The 40GB PS3 ($400, as of 4/24/08) has built-in gigabit ethernet and is one of the few Blu-ray players that supports BD-Live (Profile 2.0) content that can be delivered via the Internet. It also supports Blu-ray BonusView, for playing back picture-in-picture content.

The PS3's movie playback experience is best if you start from scratch, inserting a disc into the front-loading slot as soon as you power up the unit. It took just 3 seconds for a test disc to physically load into the unit itself, followed almost immediately by the PlayStation 3 startup music. The screen then blacked out, and the movie came up. Total elapsed time from disc insertion to the start of the film: a respectable 24 seconds.

The PS3 doesn't come with a separate remote control for video playback, so I had to use the game controller to navigate through movies, and that required two hands. (Sony does sell a dedicated remote control, for an extra $25; with this remote, the Blu-ray playback experience should be exponentially smoother.)

You'll want to buy the remote: Using two hands to control basic functions like play, fast forward, and rewind was both ungainly and imprecise; I missed not having dedicated buttons for such common features.

To navigate up, down, left, or right within the disc menus, you can use either the PS3 controller's directional pad or the left analog stick controller. You press X to select options and to activate play. The O button lets you exit the Blu-ray player, the square button brings up the disc's pop-up menu, and the triangle button gives you a handy, transparent-overlay on-screen menu that pops up on the left side of the screen. This menu provides quick access to certain settings, and awkward access to dedicated, software-based playback controls (buttons for fast-forward, rewind, play, and stop, for example)--which you need, since the game controller lacks such dedicated controls.

Trying to perform certain operations, such as precise fast-forwarding, was particularly frustrating. The fast-forward steps ahead at 1.5X, 10X, 30X, and 120X, and you must press the X button to cease moving forward. Stepping forward frame by frame is even more awkward: No option clearly exists for this, but you can press the controller's X button to pause playback and then use the analog stick or the right and left arrows on the directional pad to advance a frame at a time.

Unfortunately, you'll have to experiment to figure all this out: The manual included with PC World's PlayStation 3 test unit provided no clues on how to use the controller's buttons for movie navigation. I had to dope out the responses via trial and error, and frequently found several paths to the same operation. This could be either confusing or convenient, depending on your perspective and on how comfortable you are using the controller to navigate the interface.

I found the pop-up info display elegantly designed--unobtrusive, yet easily readable. (The easiest path to this display: Press the Select button in the middle of the controller.) It's a good thing that the display is a pleasure to read, because you'll be invoking it a lot: The pop-up is the only way to figure out where you are in the disc, since the PlayStation 3 console lacks an LCD screen such as those commonly found on DVD and dedicated Blu-ray Disc players.

In the PC World Test Center's jury evaluation, the PlayStation 3's video quality proved to be average. On its own, it looked good, but compared with our top Blu-ray Disc models, such as the Phillips BDP7200/37, the PS3's video seemed to lack contrast, detail, and dimensional depth.

Nevertheless, the PS3 remains quite a deal if you want to play high-def Blu-ray movies and aren't wedded to getting a stand-alone home-theater-style device. Even factoring in the cost of the remote, you're getting a versatile, reasonably priced Blu-ray Disc player that can handle all of the latest BonusView and BD-Live content. Plus, you could use the machine to play games, browse pictures, and surf the Web, too.

Comparation Review

Toshiba Sattelite M300 and Toshiba Portege M800

Satellite M300 notebook Specifications

All in all, it's fairly sexy. Definitely sexy for a Lenovo.

Too much gloss. It's overkill in its finest form, though some may enjoy it.

It's a fingerprint magnet (shocking, we know) -- practically every square centimeter of this thing's insides grabs prints: the keys, the screen, even the palm rests.

Extraordinarily sturdy. We really can't emphasize enough how solidly this thing is built.

Appreciated accents -- the "floral swirl" motif flows from the top lid to the underside, all the way to the smattering of touch controls that sit sneakily above the row of Function keys.

Very respectable port selection for its size.

Sleek from one corner to the other, thoughtful bottom bumpers ensure a firm grip on your lap / table.

Display

LED-backlit display is gorgeous, sharp and bright. 'Tis a shame you see yourself and everything behind you entirely too much thanks to the ultra-glossy coating.

Remarkable viewing angles -- if you can't see the on-screen action, you're not looking hard enough.

Really dig the amount of recline available here. Sure wish the MacBook Pro's display could lean this far back.

1,366 x 768 resolution is outstanding for fitting a surprising amount of material onto an 11.1-inch panel.

There's no latch present here to keep it clamped down. You simply pull the display away from the bottom casing to open it up. There's two tiny rubber bumpers on each side of the trackpad to keep it from slamming down when you shut it. Not a bother to us, though it may cause concern for others.

Keyboard / trackpad

We'll be honest: we're not a fan of the keyboard. The entire thing is covered in a hard plastic coating, which gives the keys a (gasp!) plasticky feel. They simply feel too slick to the touch, and there's definitely a clicky tactility -- can't say we're shocked that we felt the same way about the Optimus Maximus.

We found our fingers sliding over to keys accidentally on a number of occasions. We're nitpicking, yes, but in cramped environments with this thing on your lap, you want a keyboard you can touch type on easily.

The truncated Tab and Backspace keys in particular took some serious getting used to.

We really like the dedicated Page Up / Page Down keys, though we wish the trackpad supported finger scrolling and multi-touch gestures.

As is customary on Lenovo machines, the Function key is placed where the Control key is on many other rigs -- yeah, you can remap them if you so choose, but otherwise you'll be forced to rewire your mind for those copy / paste commands.

The trackpad is understandably small, but it's definitely one of the best we've ever used. Great feel to the fingertips, very responsive.

Right / left clicks are on the small side, thus they take some getting used to. Once you've adjusted, however, they're quite satisfactory.

No need to double take, there's no Trackpoint here. Sorry, nipple fans! Personally, we're not bothered by this one iota, but we definitely understand that it will be a deal-breaker for others.

General use

Just to reiterate, this ain't the quickest whip on the block. It'll plow through basic chores, but you could easily find yourself frustrated with application launch times.

Considering its ultraportable nature, however, we'd say it's no more sluggish than its most similar rivals. Just don't expect this to replace your XPS M1330

The GMA X3100 graphics set is fine for everyday tasks and watching back the occasional video clip / DVD. Just don't try to fire up Crysis.

It's no lap-burner, but the U110 gets pretty toasty in extended use. Nothing out of the ordinary, though.

You won't hear this thing hissing and purring much at all, it manages to stay wonderfully quiet the vast majority of the time. Really taxing it may get the wind a-blowin', but otherwise you'll barely notice that it's on.

Bundled DVD burner worked like a charm, was just mildly noisy when reading a disc. We can't help but wish it was somehow stuffed within the frame (à la the X300), though.

Built-in stereo Speakers are shockingly loud. That being said, there's no attempt made to even hit the mids and lows. You're stuck with two high-powered (and very clear / crisp) tweeters, unfortunately.

Battery life

The 4-cell battery reported 1 hour, 45 minutes of life left upon unplugging the U110 at full charge.

31 minutes later, it showed 50% life left (and estimated 39 minutes before forced hibernation).

Exactly one hour after it was initially unplugged, it went into hibernation with 3% left.

Notes on those results: a playlist of MP3s were on half of the time, display brightness was maxed, the optical drive was used to transfer 300MB over to the HDD and then unattached, and we were surfing the web via WiFi the entire time.

You could easily stretch that one hour into nearly two by dimming the display and turning your jams off -- we just wanted to stress it a bit and see how it held up.

With light use, expecting 3.5 - 4.5 hours out of the 7-cell Li-ion isn't unreasonable, though really hammering it could drop you well below the 3 hour mark.

Although the 4-cell pack is mildly disappointing, the longevous 7-cell unit that's bundled in is greatly appreciated. However, we get the idea it wasn't a freebie judging by the machine's cost.

Source: engadget

SonyEricsson

SonyEricsson S500

This is one of the few Sony Ericsson phones with “S” symbol in the beginning of the name. Announced in the early May, it is still not commercially available, but we managed to get our hands on a prototype unit and will present it to you in a for of a preview.

The S500 is available in two color versions: stylish gold and black-green, which has very futuristic design. Our unit is in the second one, and although the label below the display says SE123 , it is a S500. It is mid-level “your average phone” and is not part of either the Cybershot or the Walkman family, but still packs multimedia features.

S500 is mid-sized slider with average weight and relatively slim profile measuring 0.6” (14mm). It fits nicely in the hand, and for the opening of the slider, spring mechanism assists you. We don’t like that its movement is not smooth and when you open it to the half, the mechanism pushes it sharply to the end. Also, the upper slider doesn’t cover the whole bottom part, and you cannot push from the bottom, but should push the front side instead.

When closed, the phone has glossy black finish applied to the front, the back is math black and the sides are in contrasting white. When opened, you see that the front of the bottom slider (where the keyboard is) and the back of the top slider (where is the camera) are in green metallic color. This whole combination, together with the colors of the lights, looks very … strange. It is unusual combination of colors which is extravagant, and makes the phone stand out of the crowd.

The display and the navigation buttons are on the front side of the top slider. The display is QVGA with 262k colors and size of 2.1 inches. It is bright and contrasting unit but as it was with the W910, the colors could be more and the transition from one hue to another is not very smooth.

Below are the navigation keys, including two software buttons, back (arrow) and clear keys, internet button and shortcut. Typical for Sony Ericsson, they are small but with good relief and enough space between each other. In the middle is the circular 5-way d-pad which is illuminated in signal green-yellow.

Right below, located on the front side of the top slider is the loudspeaker, which is used for ringtone playback. It is loud one, but one of the tracks preloaded with the phone had noises when put to highest level.

The numeric keypad is almost totally flat and they keys are small, grouped together in rows. We would prefer them with bigger size, using the space otherwise left in areas around them. The whole keyboard is illuminated in white.

On the right is the proprietary jack, and on the left is the volume control rocker, which is the only side key. Rather strange for the brand is that this key is on the top slider instead on the bottom one. The two sides also pack elongated LED lights, which blink in bluish (theme dependent) color. When a call comes, they blink in Red-Green-Blue, but don’t indicate a missed call with any color.

The top side houses the tiny power button and the slot for M2 memory cards.

Interface:

As the software of the phone is based on the old Sony Ericsson UI, we won’t discuss all of its features, but just some. This software almost a copy of the one of K800/K810 and is not like the one of the W910.

We are happy surprised that this one supports flash themes, which the Walkman phones feature. Preloaded are three themes: Clarity, Everchanging and Day and Night; the latter is most interesting as it changes the main menu view to horizontal list instead of 3x4 grid, which is the standard view.

Not part of the Walkman series, the S500 has the standard music player with it, the one from K800. It allows sorting the music by artist, tracks, playlists and has equalizers.

The camera interface is neither the one from K800/K810 Cybershot phones, nor the new one we saw in W910. It is in portrait orientation and in menu-structure offers options like shooting mode, night mode, self-timer, Effects, White Balance and settings. Here also is the camcorder.

We won’t comment on the phonebook, organizer and the messaging menus. Check the Sony Ericsson K800 review to view what they are, if you are not familiar.

We like the S500 – it is extravagant, stylish, and eye-catching slider with pocket-friendly size and not a few features. Still, it is targeted to limited group of people who won’t worry about using a phone in signal-green (and black) color.
By PhoneArea

Nintendo

Nintendo Announce New Console - Revolution

By Xboxnews

Nintendo said Wednesday it is developing a new home game console code-named "Revolution" in an apparent attempt to catch up with rivals Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata refused to give details, saying he feared competitors will steal the plan, but said a prototype, which will be shown next year, will deliver "new ideas" for entertainment and won't be merely a more powerful version of its current Game Cube machine.

Iwata reiterated his view that Nintendo should not follow the strategy of Sony, which is working on a more powerful chip to drive its next home game machine.

He said the gaming industry is reaching a dead end as its past formula for success – dazzling consumers with more sophisticated imagery – no longer works. Game sales have been declining for years in Japan, and growth has been slowing even in the more solid U.S. market, he said.

"What we need is not a next-generation machine but a next-generation way of playing games," Iwata told reporters at a Tokyo hotel. "We need to propose a new idea so that the game industry can overcome its current crisis."

Sony says it will start selling a portable version of its PlayStation machine later this year in Japan and overseas at a later date.

To counter that threat, Nintendo is planning a new portable game machine for later this year in the United States and Japan. The Nintendo DS, which stands for "dual screen," adds a new twist to its handheld GameBoy Advance by having two color liquid-crystal displays.

That allows players to see a close-up on one monitor and an overall map on the other in some games, or use one as a touch-panel to turn or move figures in other games, as well as relay scribbled messages to another player through a wireless connection.

"Double screens and touch panels are not new technologies," Iwata said. "The idea of using them for a game machine is new."

Takashi Oka, an analyst at UFJ Tsubasa Securities Co. in Tokyo, said Nintendo will likely hold up against the threat from Sony's offerings because of its ability to come up with appealing game software. Sony's PlayStation Portable, nicknamed PSP, will also probably be mostly used to watch video instead of playing games, he said.

"Nintendo's power in creating game software is still going strong," Oka said. "I don't consider the PSP as a game machine so its arrival won't affect Nintendo."

Apple

Apple's Brick: A Radical New Laptop?

The latest whispers are that Apple will announce a notebook made from a solid brick of aluminum
By Arik Hesseldahl

When they're not hand-wringing over the recent drop in Apple's share price, Mac enthusiasts have been transfixed lately by the mystery product, code-named "brick," that's due for release later this month.

Some bloggers and pundits have suggested it might be a new iteration of Apple TV or an updated Mac Mini. But according to a report on 9to5Mac.com, "brick" refers not to what it is, but how it's made. The Web site, which cites an anonymous source, says the code name has to do with a manufacturing process for Apple's MacBook and MacBook Pro lines of laptops. Apple (AAPL) will build the notebook out of a single piece of carved-out aluminum—a brick.

Whatever it signifies, the new computer may be precisely what Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer meant when he referred to a "new product transition that I can't talk about yet" during Apple's most recent earnings conference call in July. The transition is among the reasons Apple said it expects to make lower gross profit margins (BusinessWeek.com, 7/22/08) during the next several quarters.

But if the new product does prove to be a notebook made from a block of aluminum, how much pressure are Apple's margins likely to undergo? More to the point, would Apple's brick be a brick?

HP

HP Mini 1000 Mi Edition User Review

By Perry Longinotti

The HP Mini 1000 Mi Edition (Mini 1110NR) is a cool-looking, low-cost netbook focused on easy Web access and entertainment. It uses the same design as the Mini 1000, but runs the Mobile internet (Mi) software rather than Windows. Mobile internet is an easy-to-use interface built on Linux, but is it enough for most people to enjoy their e-mail, Internet, digital photos, music, and video?

Last year's HP Mini-note 2133 looked great, but it was let down by a pokey slow VIA C-7 CPU and 4200rpm HDD. I can imagine many people who got to handle a 2133 trying to rationalize how they probably didn't need too much CPU power because of how well-built and attractive the 2133 was. I know I did, but thankfully I came to my senses before plunking down $500 on what was sure to be a disappointing investment.

We'll never know why the VIA/Centaur C-7 was picked for the 2133 (everyone loves to cheer for the underdog, and I am sure that the VIA Nano will rock when its released in 2012), but its descendants like the HP Mini 1110NR we are reviewing here come equipped with the much better Intel Atom processor. Here are the 1110NR Specs:

Processor: Intel Atom N270

Graphics: Intel 900 IGP

Operating System: HP Mobile Internet UI (Ubuntu Linux)

1GB DDR2 667 RAM

8GB SSD (1.8” Form Factor)

8.9” LED LCD (1024 x 600)

802.11g, 10/100 Ethernet, Bluetooth

MSRP: $379 USD, $449 CDN

Pros:

Cool operating system: Ubuntu + Mi = Win

Nice form factor - thin and stylish

Great keyboard and touch pad

Despite having some gaps, the Mi concept has some serious potential

Cons:

Without integrated "cloud" storage services the 8GB SSD is insufficient

HP MediaStyle applications are of limited value

Price still needs to come down a bit - there are better values on the market from HP's rivals

Memory compartment door pops off with almost no effort

Battery life is too short

Toshiba

Toshiba Laptop M115

By George Christodoulou

The Toshiba laptop m115 is part of the budget laptop series. These laptops offer a wide variety of options, high performance, and durability for a lower price than some of Toshiba's other laptop models.

As with most any other Toshiba laptop the finish is gray and black. This more professional look is respected by many, but for others that are looking for more flare it is not. But, in today's market you can buy laptop skins to customize any laptop outer shell to match your personality.

The Toshiba laptop m115 does appear to have a box shape and is rather bulky. However, the lines are seamless and the overall build to the laptop allows the inner components not to be cramped. This feature means the laptop does not overheat as quickly as some other notebooks that have their inner components tightly cramped inside.

Many find the keyboard on the Toshiba laptop m115 to be too small and cramped. Although I haven't measured the keys, I am almost certain the key size is not the standard size on most computers. I had a hard time typing on the Toshiba m115 and generally do not like the layout at all. The media bar on the Toshiba m115, in my opinion, really throws off the flow of the keyboard.

Battery life on the Toshiba laptop m115 stacked up fairly nicely. You can expect to get about 2 hours of battery life while the notebook is playing a movie at full brightness, three hours for normal use.

Acer

Acer 5920 laptops

By Pooja Lapasia

Would you believe if we told you that the Acer Aspire 5920 is designed by an expert team of designers and engineers from BMW Design works – the team that has the honor of designing some of the most gorgeous looking cars? Well you would, only once you have seen the Acer Aspire 5920 in flesh.
The smart looking laptop has a shiny black silhouette with a milky cream finish inside. For some, the contrast does a pretty good job. What’s different? The Acer Aspire 5920 has a car handle like screen lifting system which also works as the webcam. So there it goes, car designers will remain car designers, and when they design anything else, they will design it like cars. But there’s no harm in that … or there is??

There’s not where the car-inspired design stops. As you open the screen you find that the laptop resembles (or lest tries to resemble) the center console of a BMW car. The ‘center console’ has short cut keys on the sides with a blank button there (whatever it was intended for!).

 Key features

The Acer Aspire 5920 is a power packed system that has virtually all you would want in a laptop. The laptop has the nex-gen Centrino Duo with a 2GHz Intel T5300 CPU and a gregarious 2GB of RAM. Acer Aspire 5920 has an in-built Intel Turbo Memory of 512MB, which enhances the processing speed and males the system respond faster.

The Acer Aspire 5920 primarily positioned as the multimedia laptop comes accompanied with a ‘Dolby Home Theater’ and ‘Virtual Surround Sound’. The sub-woofer provides the extra bass. The Acer Aspire 5920 can be connected to external speakers as well making the . ound system of the laptop superb.

To enrich your multi-media experience, the Acer Aspire 5920 has a 15.4 inch screen. The wide screen is perfect for watching movies or even playing games. For the ultimate gaming experience Nvidia GeForce 8600GT graphics card would be a value-add. It's packed with premium camera features that are rarely found on mobiles including a world-leading 8.1 megapixel camera.

The SonyEricsson C 905 Silver is a high flyer with a lot to offer. The latest phone in Sony’s Cyber-shot range, the Sony C905 is equipped with an 8.1MP autofocus camera with an endless list of features. Starting with a built-in Xenon and photo flash, the Sony Ericsson C905 Silver includes 16x digital zoom, image stabiliser, red-eye reduction, face detection, BestPic technology, geotagging and picture blogging. Oh, and just for good measure there’s a secondary videocall camera as well.

Plus there's an anti-shake image stabilizer to help you avoid blurry pictures, along with built-in GPS to help users remember where they took each photo! As you'd expect from Sony Ericsson, this is not just a camera phone. It is also a music player, a radio, a games machine and a web browser, adding WiFi and 3G connectivity to keep you online. But it's the camera that really stands out. If you're serious about photography, the Sony Ericsson C905 is an excellent choice.

The Silver Sony C905 also has an accelerometer which comes in handy for automatic rotation of the screen when viewing pictures and if you want to have a family viewing on your TV, then the TV output port is a blessing. The 2.4 inch TFT screen display is of course scratch resistant thanks to its high quality mineral glass cover. When it comes to memory, the Sony Ericsson C905 proudly boasts 160MB user memory plus optional 2GB expansion.

Anything but lacking in its abilities, the SonyEricsson C905 offers Quad Band GSM with GPRS and EDGE technology and Tri Band UMTS (3G) and HSDPA support plus WiFi capabilities with DLNA support.

Multimedia features are overflowing on this phone with an MP3 player, FM Radio with RDS support and built-in GPS with A-GPS functionality. Identify song titles and artists with TrackID music recognition software onboard, download music and games direct to your phone with PlayNow and share images and files with bluetooth wireless that comes with A2DP stereo support. With video streaming you can watch live video’s on your mobile phone and download onto your pc using a USB connection.

Incredibly Sony have managed to pack all this into 104 x 49 x 18mm dimensions and the phone weighs 136g. Battery life consists of 9 hours of talktime and 380 hours on standby with GSM networks and approximately 4 hours of talktime and 360 hours standby on 3G networks.

Initially available on O2 pay monthly contract deals it is expected that the Sony C905 Silver edition will be made available on further UK networks in the very near futurem with four difefrent colour schemes to choose from the C905 is an attractive proposal for any mobile phone enthusiast especially those who demand the highest quality from their wireless devices.

Nokia

Nokia's N97 Smartphone, a Laptop in Your Pocket

By Jack Ewing

The buzz on the Internet was that Nokia would announce it is building a laptop computer. That was off the mark, but it's easy to see how the rumor got started. The N97 smartphone that the Finnish company unveiled in Barcelona on Dec. 2 looks very much like a laptop, albeit one that fits in your pocket.

Nokia's (NOK) new top-of-the-line model, to sell for $695 before operator subsidies when it launches worldwide in mid-2009, has a 3.5-inch touchscreen but also a miniature keyboard that folds out from underneath. In the open position, the N97 resembles a miniature laptop. Users can type on the screen but also choose the compact keyboard.

The N97 represents another flanking attack by Nokia on the market for touchscreen devices pioneered by Apple's (AAPL) iPhone. In October, Nokia unveiled the 5800 touch handset, aimed at music lovers (BusinessWeek.com, 10/2/08). The 5800 comes with a year's worth of music downloads in many markets and costs less than an iPhone—an attempt to peel away customers who might buy an iPhone for its iTunes capability. The N97, with a silvery finish, targets another category of user: the crowd that spends every waking hour on the Internet. Features include an icon, or widget, that allows users to stay continually connected to Facebook, for example.

Thanks for the Memory

Nokia's smartphone line needs some sexy new products. The company was the leader in creating a market for handsets that have computer-like processing power. With a huge 32GB of built-in storage, which can be expanded to 48GB, the N97 represents another escalation in this trend.

But the iPhone as well as new products from BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIMM) have challenged Nokia's dominance. Nokia's share of the smartphone market slipped to 47.5% in the second quarter of 2008, down from 50.8% a year earlier, according to market-watcher Gartner (IT). And share probably fell further in the third quarter. While Nokia executives hate comparisons with the iPhone, the Apple product is clearly taking its toll. "Nokia has suffered tremendously from not having a touchscreen device, there's no way around that," says Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.

To some extent, it's inevitable that Nokia's hegemony will slip as smartphones become mass-market devices, and more companies launch handsets with features such as satellite navigation or Internet access. "Nokia has been dominant—the only player in reality," Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said in an interview. Now, he concedes, "it's clear our share of the smartphone market has come closer to our share of the total market."

But that doesn't mean Kallasvuo is ready to accept a less dominant role. Nokia will aggressively promote the N97 in the U.S., he said, acknowledging that the American market tends to set worldwide technology trends.

Courting Controversy

Is the N97 the kind of product needed to reverse market share slippage? "It's a good step forward," says analyst Milanesi. But, she adds, "from the touch perspective it's still not quite there."

The hybrid design is likely to be controversial. Critics will say the N97 looks like a shotgun marriage between an iPhone and Nokia's Communicator, the brick-like, computer/phone that the company has continually updated since its launch in the late 1990s. In fact, the N97 is about as compact as the iPhone, though a bit thicker.

Nokia managers say their research clearly showed that the target market for the N97 doesn't want to type on a touchscreen, especially as mobile e-mail becomes commonplace. "They want a keyboard because they are texting so much," says Jonas Geust, the Nokia executive vice-president in charge of high-end devices.

It Vibrates When Touched

To enhance the N97's appeal, Nokia will package it with services such as music downloads and turn-by-turn navigation. Its camera produces DVD-quality video, Nokia says, and the battery is the company's most powerful yet, allowing a day and a half of continuous music listening. Unlike the iPhone, the N97 screen will vibrate slightly when touched, offering confirmation that input has been received. The N97 won't have the iPhone's ability to take commands from more than one finger at a time, the feature that allows users to swipe and zoom images and is a big reason for the Apple handset's appeal.

It is unusual for Nokia to announce a product so far in advance of launch. Geust says the company wanted to give developers enough time to write the programs that will be crucial to the N97's appeal.

Analyst Milanesi worries, however, that the N97 may not look as cutting-edge in six months or so when Nokia launches it on the market. "Compared with what we see on the market today, it's very competitive," she says. "But what will we see on the market by then?"

Samsung

New Samsung Phone: a Real iPhone Killer?

By Moon Ihlwan

To hear Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer talk about Samsung Electronic's new upgraded smart phone, T*Omnia, Korean consumers will soon get the mother of all smart phones on the planet. “The T*Omnia is at the forefront of this new generation of mobile devices,” declared Ballmer at a Seoul ceremony unveiling the phone on Nov. 3. “I like the T*Omnia phone because it brings together communications, productivity, multimedia, and entertainment in a way that meets the needs of both consumers and mobile professionals.”

The T*Omnia, an upgraded version of the Samsung Omnia that has been available in Asia and Europe for more than two months, will be introduced only in the Korean market from around Nov. 20 by SK Telecom, Korea’s largest mobile carrier. It certainly offers more features than the iPhone. It includes mobile TV and 5-megapixel camera with auto focus and image stabilizer as well as Microsoft Outlook, Wi-Fi, GPS, fast Internet access through 7.2-megabaud per second HSDPA and Bluetooth support. But the real reason why Ballmer speaks highly of the phone is that it runs on Window Mobile 6.1 to allow users to swap any Window-based files seamlessly with their PCs.

One big attraction of the phone, however, is Samsung’s flexibility to work with the carrier. Any owner of the T*Omnia will have free access to SK Telecom’s music service called Melon that boasts 1.05 million songs and pieces of classical music. Other free services offered by SK include real-time feed of news, prices of five stocks and weather information as well as dozens of TV channels.

Samsung is negotiating with a U.S. carrier with an aim to roll out the phone in America by the end of this month. But it is not clear wether U.S. consumers will have access to the upgraded phone or its old version, which has a slightly smaller touch screen with lower resolution. The new version has a 3.3-inch LCD (versus a 3.2-inch screen) with a much higher 800X480 resolution (versus the earlier 400X200).

Nintendo

Nintendo Wii

Wii Specification:

CPU: PowerPC based "Broadway" processor, made with a 90 nm SOI CMOS process

GPU: ATI "Hollywood" GPU, made with a 90 nm CMOS process

In 2001 Microsoft developed it. And already worldwide they have sold 20 million units. To compete with Sony’s Playstation, Microsoft rebuilt the X-Box and came up with X-Box 360. Hers Experimental Design Laboratory Inc. of Japan and Astro Studios of USA developed the exterior of the system. This game can be played from Media Center PC, MP3 player, digital camera or any Microsoft® Windows® XP-based PC.
It is a very powerful machine. And it has an online version as well. The online version is called X-Box live. With X-Box 360 we can do a lot of activities. Apart from video games we can rip, stream, download any media including movies, music etc.

There are two types of X-Box 360 available in the market:
X-Box 360 and X-Box 360 Core System.
The X-Box pack also contains a HD AV cable, an Ethernet connectivity cable, a headset, a wireless controller, a media remote and a removable hard drive.
